Launch and Approval

Launched: 1920 under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The Non-Cooperation Movement was approved at a special session of the Indian National Congress at Calcutta in 1920.

Gandhi and the Khilafat Movement

Important: Gandhi merged the Khilafat Movement with the Non-Cooperation Movement to strengthen Hindu-Muslim unity.

The combination of the two movements helped create a wider mass base for the anti-colonial struggle.

Chauri Chaura Incident, 1922

Date: 4 February 1922
  • A crowd associated with the Non-Cooperation Movement set fire to a police station at Chauri Chaura.
  • Chauri Chaura was a village in the Gorakhpur region of Uttar Pradesh.
  • 22 policemen died in the incident.

Withdrawal of the Movement

  • After the Chauri Chaura incident, Gandhi called off the Non-Cooperation Movement because of the outbreak of violence.
